I need to lighten up!!

Although today is my birthday and i'm definitely going to enjoy it, this morning i was kind of beating myself over the head because i haven't exercised as much as i would have like to. As i sat and thought about it, my schedule has been out the window for the last week and i've been doing a lot more running around.

Yesterday i spent the morning with the hubs at rehab, then all afternoon i cleaned the house. This morning hubs had a dr's exam so off on the bikes we went and it probably took 20 mins there and 20 mins back.(by the way the dr says hubby is doing awesome and can go on his bike for as long as he doesn't feel he's overdoing it) And while we're out on the bikes i'm saying to the hubs that i really need to get out on my walk. He turns around and says what do you think your doing right now?? Exercising!!

Sometimes we are way too hard on ourselves. Sometimes we just need to lighten up!!

When i look back over the years i'm much healthier now than i was. I eat healthier and i enjoy it, i exercise and love it most of the time, and i think i appreciate life that much more!!

Tonight i'm going to relax and enjoy myself, tomorrow will be back to normal. (and back to rehab:)

All i have to say is that today was a lot of info even for me to take in, never mind someone who has never monitored what they eat. But it did give me a few pointers.

Now back to regular programming :)

Today while doing my major housecleaning i was just boogying to the tunes!! I figured if i didn't get to walk with my walking group i was sure going to get some exercise in somehow. Hubby was enjoying a big laugh just watching me :)

Yesterday was the start of my holiday from work!

And tomorrow is my birthday, and in case any of you are curious i'll be 47 !! My daughter and her boyfriend are taking us to a seafood restaurant where i know they make the most delicious salads with seafood on top ;) Now hubby is a newfie, and as any canadian knows that means he's going to have the fish and chips. You know what, it's his birthday and one fish and chip dinner is neither here nor there. So we plan to go and celebrate and have fun!!

Just back

from the cardio rehab!! What a great place. It has an awesome gym that hubby gets to use for 4 months and i can use at a nominal feel. It has nurses, dieticians, cardiologist, and kinesiologist there :) Oh and it's run by the hospital he was in!!

They give one on one assessments for diet, exercise etc.

This week and next week are the educational lessons. And next monday hubs gets his stress test :)

Hubs was having a grand old time. She would ask do you know what flax seed is and he'd be the only one raising his hand, she'd as what about tofu, and he'd raise his hand. 3/4 of the products the dietician put on the table i believe we have in the fridge ;) And they couldn't get over that he was already back on his bike, mind you slowly and for only 15-20 mins but it's driving him crazy not to be out and about!!

So in today's program they went over saturated and unsaturated fats. Here's the numbers they gave me:

Cut the total fat to 60-65 grams/day (most of the time we are less than that)
Limit the saturated fat in our diet to 10-15 grams/day
red meat once or less each week
low fat milk, skim or 1%
cheese with less than 20% M.F every other day or cheese with 4-7% M.F. everyday
yogurt .5% or cottage cheese with 1% M.F. or less
egg-2 or less regular eggs/week or 3-4 omega 3 eggs/week or unlimited egg whites

Avoid trans fat at all costs. Eat at least 2 grams or less/day!!

Aim for 25-35 grams of fibre each day.

Eat 4-5 servings of vegetable and 4-5 serving of fruit/day.

Aim for less than 2300 mg sodium/day

limit your intake of simple sugars.

Eat at least 3 meals throughout the day

Ensure that you drink at least 8-10 cups of water per day.

Include vegetarian meals at least once/week.

Prepare foods the low fat way.

Consider making soy products part of your regular diet

Alcohol in moderation can be heart healthy in moderation

These are not my numbers but numbers they gave me :) Use these #'s at your own risk etc...........!!

I DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes i completed my first 5 km walking race :) It was awesome!! Will try to get photo's at a later time.

There were 350 walkers, and i came in 11th in my age category which isn't too bad since i've still got a bad leg :)

And i got an awesome medal, the middle part spins!!
And i won 4 prizes:
A $10 gift card for the running room!!

A $25.00 gift certificate to a clothing store down town. They sell all kinds of things.

Now this looks awesome!!

An really nice golf shirt!! You can't see it very well but it is very nice and had a $30 price tag on it ;)

Next year 10km watch out!!

Weekly weigh in and goal update

Well considering the week i've had i'm quite please with my weight this week. But not just the scale weight. I'm pleased with the way i've managed to handle stress while not letting it rip apart the healthy plans i have for myself. So here's what last weeks goals were and next weeks :)

However speaking of scale weight i'm down -1.2 bringing me to 137.4

1. journal-i did that and it definitely helped me stay on track this week
2. get back my walking habit and next sunday will be my walking race!!-really wish i could have put more walking into my life this week BUT i'm still doing my race tomorrow and i've decided that next year it will be the 10 km walk ;)
3. drink my water-done
4. stop and take time to appreciate every day ;)-i definitely have a greater appreciation for life and for what i have this week. I so lucky to have the people in my life that i have!!
5. Take a full body photo to show the difference between now and christmas!
-did that, even though i cringed i not only took it but i posted it!!

For this week:
1. get more walking in.
2. do some weights
3. enjoy my time off of work
4. celebrate my birthday and hubby's birthday with daughter and martin ;)
5. realize just how much i have in my life and enjoy it!!

Why when i walk into the grocery store are they giving out free mars bars!!!! And people are taking multiple ones.

Why at work does someone bring a 6 year old in that's eating one of those mars bars and buy them a huge smiley cookie and 15 minutes later come back for a canadian maple donut for the same child????????

Why do they advertise fruit loops as whole grain and so good for you?? When there are people out there that actually believe it!!

And you wonder why diabetes is on the rise?? Childhood obesity????

Honestly i was shaking my head!!

Yet another busy day

This morning i went down to city hall to pick up my goody bag with my free shirt! Well the goodies were a box of crackers, an iron supplement and the bag ;) But the shirt is awesome!!

Now that's done i need to get my lunch ready, hubs meals ready, get ready for work!!
Up early tomorrow to get to the race and get my chip by 8:00 a.m.

I see a glass of wine, my feet up and a movie in my future tomorrow night ;-)

Well i think my scales are totally screwed up!! Hubby gets up weigh's in and it's a nice number. Has to go to the bathroom. Not going to get graphic here but lets just say he definitely weighs less after that!! And the scale is up 2 lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the heck!! And then he steps on again and it's down 1 lb. So i guess it's off to the store to buy a new scale.

Does this mean that my weigh in's have been wrong?? I'm almost scared to check!!

I almost thought that last week's weigh in was a fluke because it was such a drop and just for that day. The following days it was going down a bit from the number before but was way higher than my weigh in.

I guess i'm just going to have to go with the numbers and hopefully they're not too far off :(

Update: Have i said that i love my new scale ;) It's showing me weighing less than the old one!! And it has a memory that keeps track from one day to the next!!

My schedule for today....

This morning i'm off to pick up some groceries, i find it funny that i'm out of all my veggies because the daughter and the hubby have suddenly turned into rabbits :-)

When i get back i'm going on the stationary bike. And i hope to get some cleaning done!!

Then it's off to work and those stupid cookies :)

While i'm at work the nurse will come to make sure hubby is doing alright, although i'm thinking that his being back on the bike for a short slow 10 mins inside is a good indication that all is well in his world!!

And now for the scary part: i have to pick up my goodie bag for the race saturday morning before work!! I must admit i'm getting a little nervous about this. Part of me is excited and part of me thinks that i'll make a fool of myself.

And when it's all over and done with they say there are taking pictures of the finish line so i'm hoping to get one online that i can put on here to show i've actually done it!!

Strong again!

I'm feeling a lot stronger this week ;) My eating is great, my exercising is coming along.
I have my 5 km walking race this Sunday. And my daily life is more back to normal :)

But also my body feels stronger!! Now the scale isn't showing it that much, in fact since my last weigh in my weight is up. But my clothes seem to be looser and i feel great ;)
What more can you ask for mid-week?

Oh and a NSV last night. At work this week there's a major sale on these gigantic chocolate chunk cookies with smiley faces on them, all proceeds go to charity. Now i usually buy some and bring them home, i also usually eat several at work. Last night i really wanted one but resisted the urge and i definitely didn't bring any home. And this is what we have to wear to work all this week:


Oh and in case i haven't said i start my holidays on Sunday ;-)

Cookie time!!

This morning i'm making chococonut cookies that i saw on eating benders site!! They looked so good that i just have to try them.
Here's how they came out, thank goodness they only make 9 and since i know the hubs and daughter will help me eat them they won't last long :)

Oh i used 1/2 whole wheat flour and i substituted 1/2 the brown sugar for splenda and i added an egg white. Can you tell i like to tweak things??


Yesterday when i was out and about i saw........really cute things. Like the dinosaur i that i saw on the building that i have walked passed for years and never noticed. Yesterday i happened to be walking on the other side of the street and saw it for the first time!! And the Octoberfest signs that tell me it's coming soon and boy is it ever big here!! Kitchener used to be called Berlin :-)
That's why i love to walk because i get to see so many new things.

Being grateful

This morning it finally hit me how scared i was this week when hubby had his heart attack!!

I'm always the strong one.
I'm the one that keeps everything together.
I'm the one in control.

Well this week that all flew out the window!! It hit me like a brick.

I was at work and coming home to an empty house. Now everyday that i've been with him hubs has a cup of tea ready for me after i finish work, he also comes and walks me home from work!! For the first time there was no tea and i walked home alone in tears.

I cannot put into words how much i love and appreciate my hubby for the the little things he does to show his love but for just always being there for me, for never yelling at me and for always only having only good things to say about me!!

Another busy day :-)

Well this morning i'm off to a meeting to help plan the annual christmas party which is for approximately 270 people!! I do this every year and it's a blast.
Of course i'm walking to it :)

Next we're off to have coffee with ralph's worker who will co-ordinate all the different appointments with the rehab places and the dr's!! That will take some pressure off of me.

Then i have a board of director meeting where dinner is catered to. Don't worry i'm not about to blow a great week there :)

Finally i'm home and i get to watch the Biggest Loser. All in all a fantastic day!!

Update on the hubby: Nurse came yesterday and his blood pressure and pulse was absolutely spot on. And she let us know he is doing absolutely awesome!! Great news.

Today's plan

This morning i have a meeting about planning for an upcoming newsletter. Then i'm helping to stuff envelopes with invitations for a bowling and pizza party. Oh and i get off the bus early so i can get a 40 minute walk in!!

Then it's back home so i can get the bike out to bike to the library (they have a book in for me), the bank, and stop by the dr's to drop off info the hospital wants his dr to have.

Then it's home for a really nice salmon dinner ;) And then i get to relax... maybe!!

At least i don't have to work!

Weekly weigh in and goal update

This week i'm down 2.0 lbs bringing me to 138.6 ;)

Well it was a rough week for sure!! However things are going well now. I realize that a lot of my goals this week went out the window but some i still managed to do:

This weeks goals i'm keeping it simple:
1. journal-I actually kept this up, it helped to keep my focused!
2. exercise focusing on speed for walking-unfortunately i didn't manage this but i will be on the ball with it this week!!
3. drink water-i did
4. enjoy life-certainly appreciated every day more than i usually do
5. take lots of photo's especially at the volunteer picnic on tuesday.Did manage to take photo's at picnic, unfortunately the only other picture besides food was of my husband at the hospital.
6. allow myself to accept and enjoy the support and compliments i get on my blog ;)
-when i made this goal i did not think i would be getting the kind of support that i ended up needing this week. But you guys rock!! I felt like part of a family and i've never received so many kind and understanding words as i did this week. Truly love you guys ;)

Back to normal

Yep it feel as though life is back to normal today ;)

I'm back to work today. Meals have been planned. Hubs meals are in the fridge. And it's weigh in day tomorrow!! My eating this week has been bang on despite the stress. However my exercise is sadly lacking so goodness knows what my weigh in will be.

The one big thing that was different this week was the way i handled the stress. Believe you me i was stressed to the max. And had quite a few times sitting at the computer in tears. However, i did not try to comfort my stress with food. Now that is major because that's what i would normally do.

And now that the stress has lessened i'm not left feeling guilty about the extra pounds or the binge eating that would have happened normally. And then i would have started over at day one once again!!

Don't get me wrong. If you feel you need a kick in the butt and in order to do that you start over from the beginning again, good for you. But i'm sick and tired and getting too old to want to keep doing that for the 100th time!!

Low fat dessert tofu

Sorry i forget who had asked, but someone had commented on what low fat dessert tofu i used but i had already thrown away the wrapper. Well i bought another one today almond flavor, it is so good on it's own or in a smoothie!!

A plan...

Well hubby's home!! And Snuffy's definitely happy he's home ;)

We've started a notebook keeping track of what he eats, drinks, exercise, total fat, cholesterol etc.... which he can take with him to dr's, dieticien etc ;)

Since he's going to cardio rehab he will be visiting a dietician and will be doing the stress tests etc i thought it would be a good idea to keep everything written down. Now because he's already with a mental health community agency they are having their nurses come once a week starting on monday and they will monitor his pulse, blood pressure etc... Which is great because it will take some stress off of him i think.

But you know what i find the hardest?? I'm making out a daily menu for hubs so that he knows what he can have for snacks and meals while i'm at work. Now that's not the hard part, the hardest part i find it trying to come up enough food for the cals they say he should be eating!! How weird is that??

Well hubs went for the angioplasty this morning at 7:30 and they found out that one of his arteries was 95% blocked, however all the other arteries were in great shape!!

So he had the shunt put in and all is well ;) He comes home tomorrow morning!!

Dealing with the stress has been hard!!! I so wanted to either eat or have a glass of wine last night, however i didn't ;)

And an NSV this morning after leaving the hospital i phoned the bus # and it said the next bus would be in 25 mins. I thought about it for a minute and then thought, you know what i bet i can beat that bus to the terminal just by walking fast ;) And off i went and yep i beat it!!

So now to get ready for work.

I just want to take a second to say how wonderful the nurses and the doctors were. They listened to anything my husband and i were asking and took the time to tell us exactly what was happening!! They are the best ;)

Just came back from the hospital. Hubby did have a small heart attack within the last 2 days!! He's due to get the angioplasty done tomorrow and hopefully if the blockage isn't bad they will put the stunt in and he'll be home friday ;) He's stable and perky and wishes he was at home.

I did get a chuckle when the cardiologist asked:
do you smoke-no
anyone in the house smoke-no
do you exercise-2-3 hours on the bike most days ;) Loves to be outside
do you eat healthy-90% of the time (he does like snacks but for main meals he eats very healthy)
what type of housing do you live in?-townhouse with 3 flights of stairs!! ;)

The cardiologist turned to him and said awesome!!

Bad news!

Hubby has been at the hospital getting tested to see if he's had some kind of heart attack. He's stable now but he's been having some chest pain for a while and put it down to the cold he has! Will update later. Thoughts and prayers would be appreciated.

Pic's of the picnic!!

Had an awesome time!! Unfortunately lunch wasn't as good as i had to wait forever to get a veggie burger and when i finally got it, it wasn't very good so i ate maybe a 1/4 of it!! However i did have some watermelon and cherry tomatoes ;) I managed to stay clear of the sweets.

I did however do a lot of running around! Plus i was in the water balloon toss, the hula hoop (of which i failed miserably), and officiated the egg race and the water bucket race ;)

The munchies

Last night while watching a movie with the hubs i had the munchies, i wasn't really hungry just wanted something, anything!!

So what did i pick??
1/2c multigrain cheerios, 1/2c special k cinnamon pecan, and a tsp of mini chocolate chips thrown in to splurge ;) And you know what, i enjoyed every last bite.

Now comes the strange part, i actually was mad at myself on the one hand because i really didn't need anything else on the other hand i was proud that at least i didn't binge and i ate something half way healthy ;) Now does that make sense??

Sometime i just shake my head and cannot figure out this healthy eating thing, other times i think i've got it down pat!!

And the scale? Don't get me started. I'm one of those people who can fluctuate up and down 2lbs on any given day!!

Oh well. I'm now going to focus on getting ready for the picnic and i'm going to go have some fun and eat a veggie burger ;)

Todays plan

Well today i'm catching up on the house ;) It's about time!!
This afternoon i have my walking group and as a treat i'm going to pick up the new vivanno at starbucks after ;)

Hubby has a cold so i plan on pampering him a bit. That's one of the reasons we're having macaroni and cheese tonight!!

Have to get a few things ready for the annual picnic tomorrow. This is a picnic for people with mental health issues that i volunteer with. I'm just hoping we have no rain for it!!
Lots of fun, egg races, water balloon toss, water bucket races, hula hoops ;) Will be taking pictures for sure ;)

Looking forward to tomorrow as the biggest loser families starts. You know i'll be watching t.v. for a change. Anyone else plan on watching it??

Oh well :0(

How nice of TOM to visit the day before my weekly weigh in!! So this week i'm up 2.2 lbs ;( Oh well it will be off again this week.

How did last weeks goals go??
1. walk 5x this week increasing my speed and leaving my camera at home a couple of times so i can work on speed. Hard to do when you stop to take pictures ;) And i have to get ready for the race.-pretty sure i only got out on 4 walks but i had great walks considering.
2. Stay with tracking my food!-yes i did
3. Enjoy life savor the little things that happen.-the last couple of weeks i have been a lot more laid back which is a good thing!!
4. If eating things that aren't as healthy as i would like try to enjoy a reasonable serving and then STOP!! (This is a big one for me)-No i didn't do well on this, i will work on this again this week!!
5. Smile at the people i meet. Sometimes i get a little crusty ;(

Walked the planned 5 km for her race walk this morning even after getting up and not really wanting to??

Whose mp3 died 3/4 of the way around the course??

Who forgot her bus pass and was lucky she had coffee money on her??

Who managed to finish the 5 km in 50 mins and who could have pushed it more had she wanted to??

Who when they get home goes to the bathroom only to find out TOM has visited with a passion!!

Well i was living in the same town on the 14 th floor of a high rise. I was just leaving a job that had major stress for another job right across the road ;) My kids were only 12 and 10!!

Well i would like to go walk the route for my race walk this month but it's supposed to pour with rain so i may have to do it on monday.
I need to catch up with the house chores (what else is new)

Since i'm helping to co-ordinate a volunteer picnic on tuesday i have to get the games reading which includes drilled holes in some buckets ;)
I want to watch the new jackie chan, jet li movie tonight.
Need to run to the drug store today.
Since i have the day off i think after all this i'll lay back and vegetate ;)

Set my children up with homes, cars etc
Go traveling for a long time
Donate some to where i volunteer because i think they do an awesome job.
At christmas i'd like to annonymously donate to some needy families.

I went grocery shopping today

After getting back from the grocery store today i couldn't believe how many things i buy now that a year ago would never have seen the inside of my grocery cart.

And rather than rhyme them off i thought i'd take a photo, cause i'm kinda lazy like that you know ;)

Of course this does not include everything i bought!!
Oh and i made the best smoothie today using almond dessert tofu, frozen berries and flax seed!! Awesome.

Smile :0)

O.k one of my goals was to smile at the people i meet and not be too crusty!! Well this week is pushing that goal to the limit ;)

First of all i go to work last night only to find out that everyone's hours are being cut back, all except a couple of people who have been there since time began ;) For me? I'm not too happy about it but i will live with it!

So smiling to all my customers last night was pushing it but i made it!! The funniest one though was when an ex-girlfriend of my ex-hubby came in last night and as she was leaving the girl i was was working with said "oh my she is shooting daggers at you" to which i stood there with an even bigger smile, wished everyone a great night and thought i'm a much nicer person than you are ;) Take that !!

But all in all i've been very happy this week. I think setting goals weekly is going well for me even if i don't always do them, it's good to have something to strive for.

Back to work

Once again that time of the week has come and it's back to work!! At least i get saturday off this week ;) I see the new Jet Li and Jackie Chan movie in my future.

I've got to tell you i love the blogging world! I get so many ideas, some of the greatest support and it's just a fun place to be ;)

Remember this week i was keeping my eye on my sodium levels. Well it has indeed surprised me.
When i started i just logged in my food and would see at the end of the day how my sodium added up. Now i don't use the salt shaker and i don't cook with it unless it's for baking where an entire recipe may call for 1/2 tsp of salt. Anyway it's been eye opening. At first i was over the maximum that is the RDA 2,400 mg.
So then i started to look at the foods i was eating, which ones were the ones sending over the maximum??
Over the week i learned which foods to eat less off (processed) and which i could freely add more of (fruits and veggies)!!
My rings started to be looser, my eyes less puffy and overall i've been quite happy with the changes and i plan to sticking to them.

Oh and the bbq last night?? Awesome, great people and lots of food. However, right after the last burger came off and i was putting the hot dogs on we ran out of gas!! Oh well that's what microwaves were invented for, right?? Definitely have to the same people over again before my daughter leaves for the Netherlands in November!!

Right now i'm off to put the laundry in the dryer, go out for a walk, pick up catfood, have lunch and get ready for work!! Just your normal day ;)

I surprised myself ;)

Well i'd already planned my lunch today which was going to be a healthy sandwich, some veggies and a slimfast muffin. No problem and i would have been fine with that.
However, i went to the grocery store today and picked up some awesome plums and plouts and apples!!
So lunch time comes and i've got my nice sandwich ready, some carrots cut up and i'm thinking to myself "you know i'd much rather have 2 sweet plums than the muffin bar" Now where did that come from?? Was that actually me ;)
I impressed myself!!

Anyway on to my day. This morning i went to a final meeting to plan an annual picnic that's happening next week!! I forsee many good times in my future ;)

Of course i'll get walk #2 for the week on the way there!!

Tonight we've invited my daughters step-sister to come for a bbq. And i just found out her boyfriend is coming too ;) They don't get to see each other very often so that should be mucho fun.

And i have to dye my hair today!!

O.k. i'm officially tired!! I've walked 2 hours today ;) And i'm still going to do my rows.
