A light bulb moment!

This morning i had a hearty bowl of three grain porridge with blueberries and cranberries. Really enjoyed it and was filling.

Not an hour later i wanted the snack that i had planned for later in the day: Raisin bran muffin with apple butter.
So i had it.

I was reading through blogs and i wanted something else to eat. WHY??? I haven't had this craving for food for quite a while!!

As i sat that trying to figure out what was worth me eating and i realized that my problem was i had not had any protein!!! It's as simple as that.Well that and it's almost my TOM!

With that figured out i've decided my eating is done until lunch time :) Crisis averted!

  1. I have to agree with you Suzi, I get those all day "munchies" if I don't start out with protein for breakfast! Good for you figuring it out before you blew the whole day away looking for what you were missing!!

  2. Amen to that! Carbs (especially sugary ones) will set off all sorts of crazy cravings in me if I don't balance it out with some protein.

That's great you could tune into this in your own body (especially around TOM...all sorts of mysterious cravings and thoughts can appear out of nowhere) :)

  3. I have a terrible time with wanting to eat more and having cravings during my TOM. It's only been recently that I've figured out that that's what was causing me wanting to eat so much more.

  4. I've noticed that too! The mornings I have eggs, or an english muffin with peanut butter, I'm not hungry again until later and I don't crave carbs all day. If I start with a muffin- doomed! Awesome that you caught the pattern before you gave in!!

  7. It was really weired and i was clicking away on the comp when all of a sudden i "got" it :) And 99% i do have protein in the morning. Even with the french toast it's made with egg substitute!

  8. It's really necessary to eat carbs, protein and some kind of healthy fat to keep feeling satiated. Just carbs gives you a quick energy burst but then your blood sugar dips and you start craving more. Just Protein and you get a groggy feeling. Fat helps your body absorb several vitamins and minerals from your food , and you get a long lasting feeling of satiation. It seems that when TOM comes our metabolism kicks into overdrive and we notice the impact of foods , smells and so forth more. I think we all need to feel the affects in our own bodies to help us understand just how true this is.

  9. I can't believe you figured it out. I'm always completely in the dark about why I munch sometimes! Portion control is so hard!!!

  11. That's why I do the custard oats so often - to get the protein in there. I bet if you did those porridge things and stirred in an egg or egg whites, it would be complete for you!

  14. Yum, porridge first thing on a wintry morning is just what the doctor ordered. Love it....there is some protein in Oats, but i don't really know how they stack up against things like eggs.

Way to go on restricting yourself.

  18. Protein=good! But even still, with good protein, I still get munchie sometimes. It is particularly worse on Monday morning. I do 5 miles a morning on Saturday and Sunday, then it is generally I am much more active on the weekends. I recently started allowing myself to get to 1800 calories on the weekends and it helps. I love to hit the tuna with spicy mustard as a mid afternoon snack for the weekends! Throw some onions in it and I am good till supper!

  20. Yes to protein! It's the only thing that really calms me down when I'm hungry. I question the notion that "carbs set you off". I suspect it's more that they don't satisfy the body's legitimate hunger, leading us to eat a lot more and still feel unsatisfied.

  21. Quite possibly so!
I do know i have a lot more cravings for carbs/sugar when i don't get enough protein.
